Disabling the Auto-Updater

Some MicroSurvey software updates require that you update your USB License Key in order to run the new version.  The rule we use is as follows:

  • You must update your key if the first or second version numbers have increased (for example, upgrading from 1.0.0 to 1.1.0 or upgrading from 1.0.0 to 2.0.0).
  • You do not need to update your key if only the third version number has increased (for example, upgrading from 1.0.0 to 1.0.1).

Anyone with a current maintenance subscription plan (as of the release date of the update) can update their key using the USB License Manager application.

Anyone whose maintenance subscription plan has expired (prior to the release date of the update) can only update their key to the last version released prior to it expiring.

If you do not have current maintenance and do not plan on renewing your maintenance subscription plan, or if you simply do not want to install an update presented by the auto updater feature, you can do the following:

Solution - Step 1:

Run your MicroSurvey product and go to Help | Auto Update Preferences, and select the option "Do not check for updates automatically." then press OK.

Solution - Step 2 (Temporary Workaround):

Due to a bug in the auto-updater feature, even if you have disabled the auto updater you may still see a License Key Version Check message like the following when starting your MicroSurvey product. This is a bug that will be fixed in a future update.  After this bug is fixed, only Step 1 above will be required.

---------------------------
License Key Version Check
---------------------------
Version 10.1.0 is available for download.
Your current key version 10.00.00 is not licensed for this update.
Please use the License Manager to update your key.

Would you still like to run the Updater tool?
Note: If you would like to stop notification please
change your Auto Update Preferences under the Help Menu.
---------------------------
Yes   No
---------------------------

To stop this message from popping up on startup, you can do the following:

Use Windows Explorer to navigate into the following folder:

  • Windows XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MicroSurvey\MSCAD\Updater\
    • Note 1: the folder names beneath MicroSurvey will vary by product, use this as a guide
    • Note 2: the Application Data folder is hidden by default
  • Windows Vista / Windows 7
    • C:\ProgramData\MicroSurvey\MSCAD\Updater\
    • Note 1: the folder names beneath MicroSurvey will vary by product, use this as a guide
    • Note 2: the ProgramData folder is hidden by default

and rename the file Updater.ini to xxUpdater.ini   The new name really doesn't matter, we're just changing it such that it can't be found - but we're not deleting it so it can be restored later on if desired.

This will cause the updater to fail, so it will not know about the new version and you will therefore not see the license key version message on startup. However, because the Auto-Updater is disabled you will not see any errors as a result of renaming this file.

If you either run the Check For Updates command (Help | Check For Updates) or re-enable the auto-updater feature (Help | Auto Update Preferences) , MicroSurvey CAD will now produce an error that it cannot access the Updater.ini file.

Updater Check Error

The updater .ini file was not found.

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

If you later want to be able to install the updates, you can rename the xxUpdater.ini file back to Updater.ini (undoing the change above) and it will return to the current behaviour where it will check the key version as part of the update process.

Once again, the current behaviour where the License Key Version Check message appears despite disabling the Auto-Updater is a bug that will be fixed in a future update. After this bug is fixed, only Step 1 above will be required.
