Configuring your internal GPS receiver for FieldGenius

How to enable Your data collectors external GPS for rough positioning

In this article we will explain how to set up your Data collector's internal GPS reciever with our FieldGenius software to produce an uncorrected (Rough Hikers grade) GPS position.

The first thing a user must do is configure the data collectors GPS settings to allow FieldGenius to access the internal receiver.

  • Click on the windows START button and scroll down till you find the SETTINGS icon, in most cases the icon will look like a gear.
  • Click on the icon to take you to the settings screen, now locate the SYSTEM folder icon and click on it.
  • In the System window scroll down till you locate the External GPS icon and select it.
  • In the GPS settings window you will have three tabs labelled "Programs", "Hardware", and "Access".
  • By default it should start with the Programs tab and display a pull down menu for which to select the GPS program port.
  • Please select COM 6 for this option in the pull down menu and click on the Hardware tab at the top to switch over to its settings.
  • In the Hardware tab you will find the same pull down menu indicating a desired COM port but this time there will also be a Baud rate pull down menu.
  • For the COM port please choose COM3 and a Baud rate of 9600. *note setting this COM port/baud rate is critical!*
  • You can click on the OK button located at the bottom right corner of the window.
  • Exit back to the main menu and Launch MicroSurvey's FieldGenius.
  • Open up any project and when it takes you to the Instrument selection screen select GNSS Rover and click on the ADD button for the instrument Profile.
  • For this profile we will call it "Internal" but feel free to call it whatever you wish. Click OK and this brings you back to the Instrument selection screen.
  • Now click on the EDIT button and choose the Model and Communication option.
  • In this window we will setup FG to match the GPS settings we configured eariler.
  • For the Make choose NMEA and model should automatically be set to "Basic".
  • Now for the Port number, set it to COM3 and a baud rate of 9600 to match the previous determined settings in the GPS Hardware tab.
  • For the other settings in this screen please configure them as follows: Parity = NONE, Data Bits = 8 and Stop Bits = 1.
  • You are now ready to connect. Press the Connect button and once it has connected it will take you to the Map View screen in FieldGenius.
  • You can see your rough Lat and Long coordinates by pressing on the Globe button with the downward pointing arrow from the top toolbar.
